Introduction
We are proud to welcome Dr. Jose Herrera to Puntillo & Crane Orthodontics.
Dr. Herrera is not a newcomer to Northwest Indiana. He grew up in Crown Point and spent the last six years earning his dental degree and orthodontic specialty training at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. Now he is coming home to practice in the community that raised him.
For our patients, this is also practical good news. A fourth orthodontist means more appointment availability across Crown Point, Schererville, and Valparaiso, and one more specialist bringing the newest orthodontic technology into our offices.
Meet Dr. Puntillo, Dr. Crane, Dr. Gardiner, and Dr. Herrera
Dr. Anthony Puntillo, a board-certified orthodontist, has been creating confident smiles across Northwest Indiana for more than 30 years. He is known for his precision, his kindness, and his belief that orthodontics is about building self-esteem as much as it is about straightening teeth.
Dr. Christopher Crane combines advanced orthodontic expertise with a modern, technology-driven approach. He is deeply involved in our local communities and loves helping families experience life-changing transformations through braces, clear braces, or Invisalign.
Dr. Carolyn Gardiner is a Crown Point native who returned home to practice in the community where she grew up. She brings warm, family-focused care and understands Northwest Indiana the way only a local can.
Dr. Jose Herrera is the newest member of our doctor team and, like Dr. Gardiner, a Crown Point native returning home. He completed his dental and orthodontic education at Indiana University, graduating with High Distinction.
Together, our four doctors and our team have earned more than 845 five-star Google reviews across our three Indiana offices, making us Northwest Indiana's trusted home for braces, clear braces, and Invisalign care.
What It Takes to Become an Orthodontic Specialist
When a practice adds a doctor, most families want to know one thing first: is this person qualified to treat my child? The answer starts with what separates an orthodontist from a general dentist.
Every orthodontist is a dentist, but very few dentists are orthodontists. After four years of dental school, an orthodontist must be accepted into a competitive residency accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, then spend two to three more years studying nothing but the movement of teeth, the growth of jaws, and the development of the face. The American Association of Orthodontists puts a specific number on that training.
Dr. Herrera completed every step of that path, and then some. Alongside his orthodontic specialty certificate, he earned a Master of Science in Dentistry, a research-based degree beyond the clinical requirements of residency.
4 Years
Dental school (DDS or DMD) focused on overall oral health, fillings, crowns, and routine care. Some dentists offer limited orthodontic services with additional short courses.
6+ Years
Dental school plus 2–3 years of accredited residency dedicated exclusively to tooth movement, jaw growth, facial development, and the full scope of orthodontic treatment.
Meet Dr. Jose Herrera
Dr. Herrera grew up in Crown Point and studied in Indiana for all of his education, earning his undergraduate degree at Indiana University before continuing to the IU School of Dentistry, where he graduated with High Distinction and completed both a master's degree and his orthodontic specialty certificate.
Along the way, he was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society that recognizes scholarship and character among the top graduates of accredited dental schools.
DR. HERRERA Education & Credentials
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
- Bachelor of Science, Indiana University (2020)
- Doctor of Dental Surgery with High Distinction, Indiana University School of Dentistry (2024)

Why this matters:
Training depth translates directly into treatment quality. A specialty certificate confirms an orthodontist can safely plan and execute tooth movement; a master's degree on top of it reflects added commitment to the research behind those decisions.
What Dr. Herrera Brings to Our Patients
If you ask Dr. Herrera why he became an orthodontist, you'll get a heartfelt answer. For him, it's always been about the people:
"I chose orthodontics because of the incredible opportunity to create life-changing transformations for patients, the privilege of treating such a diverse group of individuals, and the unique challenge of developing personalized treatment plans for every smile."
That instinct toward the individual patient fits the way our practice has always worked. No two bites are alike, and no two families arrive with the same schedule, budget, or set of concerns.
He is also arriving at a moment when orthodontic technology is moving quickly, and he intends to keep pace with it through mentorship, continuing education, and annual conferences, with a particular focus on new technology that improves the patient experience. Dr. Herrera has described it as an honor and a privilege to join the practice Dr. Puntillo and Dr. Crane have built, and says he looks forward to carrying on their tradition of high-quality care while making sure every patient has a positive and welcoming experience.
What This Means for Your Care
If you're already a patient, the good news is that nothing about your treatment plan changes. Your appointments, goals, and the team you know and trust all stay the same.
If you're considering orthodontic treatment for the first time, you'll simply have even more options. With four orthodontists serving Crown Point, Schererville, and Valparaiso, it's easier to find appointment times that fit your schedule and get seen quickly if something unexpected comes up. Behind the scenes, our doctors also collaborate on cases, giving every patient the benefit of multiple experienced specialists working together to create the best possible smile.
